Today’s ’Super Pink Moon’ full Moon is the closest full moon of the year! It got me thinking about the last few months of working on some incredible filming projects; and the one thing that ties them all together. The moon. Each project has been very different, not only in studying and recording moon related activity, but also how we have approached the filming and photography technically. It’s been both fascinating and challenging, which for me, is my job at its best. Like many of you, I’m looking forward to getting stuck in again. Some ’Super Pink Moon’ Facts: -The moon will sit at a distance of approximately 221,800 miles from Earth (versus an average distance of 240,000 miles) -Although it won’t actually look pink, it is named after a pink wildflower, Phlox subulata, which commonly blooms in eastern North America in the early springtime. The flower goes by many names including wild ground phlox, the creeping phlox, moss plox and it’s nickname “moss pink.” -Full moon names date back to Native Americans living in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. -Other April moon names include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes, the Full Fish Moon, when the shad came upstream to spawn. I had the opportunity to work with this system back in mid 2015, assisting DOP Robin Cox as we filmed some beautiful night time activity of the Maned Wolf in the South of Brazil. 50 years to this day, we successfully landed on the surface of the moon! As huge fan of space and exploration, I’ve been fortunate enough in the last few months to have worked on a couple of projects celebrating one of humankind’s greatest achievements. One of those projects is available to share and enjoy now (on the BBC), titled “8 Days: To the Moon and Back”. The talented team and crew behind this documentary cleverly retell the full story of the Apollo 11 mission, by combining archive footage, cinematic CGI and newly shot reconstruction to the actual cockpit audio from the entire mission.
